John Hsu, MD, MBA, MSCE  

The MIHP is pleased to welcome John Hsu, MD, MBA, MSCE, who joined our research faculty in January 2010. In 1999, following completion of his clinical and academic training at University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Hsu became a Physician Scientist in the Division of Research, Kaiser Permanente Medical Care Program, in California. He served as director of the Kaiser Permanente Center for Health Policy Studies since 2008. Dr. Hsu studies innovations in health care financing and delivery and their effects on medical quality and costs. He uses large administrative databases and electronic health record data sets, often studying natural experiments from both clinical and behavioral economics perspectives. Dr. Hsu has been awarded grants from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, National Institute on Aging, National Institute of General Medical Sciences, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Commonwealth Fund, and Medicare Payment Advisory Commission, among others. In 2007, Dr. Hsu and his colleagues won the Article-of-the-Year Award from both AcademyHealth and the International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research for their 2007 New England Journal of Medicine publication on the unintended consequences of caps on Medicare drug benefits.
