Institute Named for Dr. Mongan

James J. Mongan, MD

In December 2009, the Institute for Health Policy was named for James J. Mongan, MD, former head of Partners HealthCare, the parent organization for Massachusetts General and Brigham and Women’s Hospitals, among others. It is now the Mongan Institute for Health Policy or MIHP. This name honors Dr. Mongan’s tremendous dedication to health care, health care policy, Massachusetts General Hospital (where he served as president from 1996-2002), and Partners (where he was President and CEO from 2003-2009). Dr. Mongan is a recognized innovator in health policy circles nationwide. He believes that the health care system should work for every individual whatever his or her station in life. This vision made Dr. Mongan a singular figure in health policy. Every major effort to enact universal health care in the United States over the past three decades, including the current one, has carried his imprint.
