MIHP's Alex Green to receive HMS Harold Amos Faculty Diversity Award
In March 2009, Associate Director of the Disparities Solutions Center, Dr. Alex Green, will receive the Harvard Medical School Harold Amos Faculty Diversity Award. The award recognizes faculty members who have significantly contributed to making Harvard Medical and Dental Schools a more "diverse and inclusive community." This prestigious award was named for the late Harold Amos, PhD, the first African-American to chair a department at Harvard Medical School.
Dr. Green, a general internist, teaches learners at all levels about improving cross-cultural communication and providing effective care to patients of diverse sociocultural backgrounds. He has held major leadership roles addressing cultural issues at HMS, including serving since 2007 as chair of the Cross-Cultural Care Committee. In his research, Dr. Green seeks to elucidate and eliminate root causes of disparities by designing and implementing systemic and provider-based interventions. Current efforts include using patient navigator programs to improve colorectal cancer screening and diabetes care for minority patients and those with language barriers. He has also studied the effects of unconscious biases on physician decision-making.
Distinguished recipients of the 2007 Harold Amos Faculty Diversity Award in 2007 were Drs. Leon Eisenberg, Edwin Furshpan, Edward Kravitz, David Potter, and Marshall Wolf. |
